![]() ![]() This is both its greatest strength and most obvious weakness. It’s a game utterly dedicated to tales of samurai, shinobi and the Japanese-inspired mythology of Rokugan. But that's a bit beyond right now. This latest incarnation of Legend of the Five Rings is a shining example of how an RPG can commit so deeply to a setting and playstyle that it’s impossible to imagine one existing without the other. If there were some kind of UI, it would give you the results from which you choose your dice, and those then get put into the post as the "chosen dice". Extra explosive rolls could likely be put into a mouseover to hide them if it feels pertinent. There's a lot less automation possibilities here unless it can be done dynamically step by step with a dedicated, which honestly feels difficult to implement without significant and dedicated hacking.įor the roll result, what is likely needed is simply a row of all the dice rolled, and an indicator of how many you can keep, and let the player do the math from there. And knowing what you can roll after the explosion can affect your decision making. This complicates a lot, because while you more often than not would want to pick an Explosive Success whenever they come up (and as such could reasonably roll the second die automatically), you might also not want to in favor of other situationally more important results. ![]() This means that if you pick that result, you gain 1 success and also roll that same dice again and can choose to keep or discard it. However, and this is a big however, one of the dice results is Explosive Success. Some dice have multiple results, others are blank, others have both positive and negative effects, meaning you have to prioritize what you want at the time. Those results are what you get and compare against a DC set by the GM. Afterwards, you pick dice results equal to your Ring that are used for that check. When rolling, you form a dice pool consisting of both dice (skill dice equal to skill ranks, ring dice equal to the Ring used), then roll it. ![]() L5R has two kinds of dice, the d12-shaped Skill Die, and the d6-shaped Ring Die. Thankfully, there are fewer dice to roll this time. Most importantly, now the individual dice results are key, as players need to choose a number of dice and their results to keep (maintaining the tradition with the roll & keep legacy). L5R5e (just L5R from now on) has similar system, but a different take on how it works. ![]()
